There is one fairly close to me every year. Have never gone though as these days there are more gawking foreign tourists than actual Japanese people at the festivities.

If anyone is trying to find me… Tamyuun on Instagram is probably the easiest.

sexuality/the human anatomy isn't something considered uncouth or held in embarrassment/reserve in some countries. It's just a cultural thing.

The only thing that bothers me about this is that, I could be wrong here but, I've never heard of them having a festival celebrating the female anatomy. >.>
Freud would have a field day on this one if he were still alive. :P
Freud would go ballistic!! LMFAO!!!

I know that the festival celebrates fertility, but I think that it goes way too far with all the statues and candy. How long has the festival been going on? Has it always been so exaggerated?

Here's just one of multiple videos covering this festival by foreigners living in Tokyo. There is a disclaimer in the beginning if you care. It's all original content as well.

There is at least one; it's very similar but I think it's further out of town and less widely advertised so most people only find out about the Kanamara matsuri. Not to mention there are a couple of temples out Kyoto way that do shinto ceremonies where both sets are fully appreciated if not exactly paraded about town in the form of giant statues.

Honestly, the concept doesn't bother me. This kind of display has been going on in the world since at least 800 BC and if it's true that the kanamara festival is run as a kind of charity event for AIDS awareness, then not much wrong with that.

The size of the penis... Very ironic.

(if you know what I mean)

Too many people spend money they haven't earned, to buy things they don't want, to impress people they don't like.
