n2-> n1

I have a question regarding the jlpt exams; specifically, n1 and n2. My professor said that in order to take n1, we have to take n2 and pass or else we would not be eligible to apply. However, I know that from n5-n2, it is not required to take the previous test in order to take a higher level test.

I can see why n1 needs a n2 requirement, but I am not too sure if that is true, or it's more of a strong encouragement/hint to first take n2.

To my knowledge, you can take whatever level you want. You're the one paying and all that, unless they've changed the rules since I tried it back in 2008 (when it was still only four levels).

I friend of mine just took his n1 a few months ago without having done any other level.
He failed it horribly, but that's a different issue ^^b
