Tartar is a sauce, tatar was and is the real name. Although tartar is sometimes accepted and used, it's a translation mishap.

Ahh tartars? they're quite an old race!

Medieval art shows them to be quite cannibalistic, I'm sure you're not. LOL. (Don't mind me, I'm a History student!)

Sort of western catholic medieval propaganda. The source says the picture is taken from Russian texbook but the sentence on an illustration is not written on slavic language.

There were no economical or any other reasons for horsemen to become cannibals.:)
