To Japanese U.S. residents - Short survey for college research

I'd like to begin by saying "thank you!" to all who reply seriously and in a helpful manner. Also, if you think a different section on this forum would be more appropriate, please let me know.

TL;DR If you prefer not to do all of the reading below and are a Japanese immigrant in the U.S. that is willing to help with a survey, just post here, message, or email me at [email protected] for the full survey.

My research project is for a cultural anthropology course. It involves an examination of the effect that (1), family structure and (2), religious affiliation has on the rate and extent of heritage language loss in Japanese immigrant families in the U.S.

I have come to this forum to supplement my data collection, and would be GREATLY appreciative of any responders who fit the criteria and are willing to take part in a (fully anonymous) survey regarding the structure and religious association of your family.

I know that these are personal matters, and as such your privacy will be respected. This data collection has no concern for personal identity, therefore the survey will NOT request any form of identification or specific location info. Also, if there is any question that you do not feel comfortable answering either way, feel free to skip it!

The preferred method of communication will either be through private message on this forum, or through email to [email protected] Just message me personally, or post in this thread letting me know that you are interested, and I will send you the full survey as soon as I am able!


The survey itself includes questions such as:

"What is the size of your immediate family?"
"Approximately how long has your immediate family resided within the US?"
"What is the composition of your immediate family?"
"What is the geographic distribution of your extended family? i.e. Does the majority live in Japan or U.S.?"
"Please briefly describe the relationship between your immediate and extended family."
"Please describe the religious composition of your immediate family."
"Please describe the religious composition of your extended family."
"Please select the statement that best applies to the language ability of your immediate family:

Everyone is proficient in Japanese.
The majority is proficient in Japanese.
Some members are proficient in Japanese.
Very few or no members are proficient in Japanese"

and a few other questions regarding religious association, family ties, and language ability.
