whaling in Japan -

I don't know how much coverage this gets over in Japan, but over here in Australia Japanese whaling ships have been a pretty big topic of conversation lately. The problem is that Japan have been whaling off our shore, which in return has caused a lot of protests because they're considered an endangered species here and are illegal to hunt. Now, I'm not saying what Japan is doing is right or wrong, but I am interested to know what the Japanese themselves think of it all. Has it been making the news over there or what? I heard the majority of the younger generation of Japanese don't even eat whale, but I'm not sure if that is true. So what's the go?
