Japanese Red Cross sending tents to China
The Japanese Red Cross Society is sending more tents than initially planned to the areas hit by the May 12th earthquake in China's Sichuan Province. The quake left more than 7-million people homeless and forced to live outdoors. Securing tents for these people is the most urgent task facing the Chinese government. The Japanese Red Cross decided to provide 6,700 tents, more than initially planned. It says the tents to be sent are of 2 types, and that each can accommodate 4 to 5 people. The total cost will be about 3-million dollars. It says the first batch of 2,200 tents will arrive in the quake-hit areas on Saturday, and the rest will be sent by June 10th. The Japanese Red Cross Society says that 3.3 million tents are reportedly needed, and that it plans to consider sending more. 2008/05/30 11:22 NHK WORLD English |
