Opposition to grill govt over essay controversy
Japanese opposition parties say they will seek parliamentary testimony from the former Chief of Staff of the Air Self-Defense Force over his essay on Japan's wartime conduct. Officials in charge of Diet affairs from 4 opposition parties reached the agreement on Tuesday. They agreed to summon General Toshio Tamogami to the Upper House Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee to have him answer questions. They also agreed to grill the government on its responsibility of having appointed him as Chief of Staff of the Air Self-Defense Force. Democratic Party official Kenji Yamaoka said it is necessary to ask questions to the former Chief of Staff. He also said that more than the content of the essay by Tamogami, the government's responsibility for having appointed him is a graver issue. 2008/11/04 16:07 NHK WORLD English |
