Hmm, yeah it makes sense that anyone wandering around with a Naruto headband trying to pick ninja fights would get wierd looks (here too ) Now one last curiousity, just so I have this straight. Me being an RPG nerd over everything else ish curious ^^.

I understand that in Japan anime is usually targeted towards teens and such, and being huge fans of it as adults can get you wierd looks. Mangas are more common and more widely accepted, correct? And vid games as I remember reading once are a very popular hobby, so seeing hard core gamers are common? Just sorting out my resources, and like I said, I'm curious. But I appriciate your help in clearing up misconceptions I had.

I came by quite a few titles that were hardly aimed towards teens and younger (anime/manga) during my stay. Many were too graphic for children or didn't have a fast story to maintain a teenager's interest.

I only met one self-proclaimed adult otaku, and he was overjoyed to have met a foreigner that knew some of the anime he loved.

It may be my own personal experience, but I found that if you asked if someone played games, they didn't include the Nintendo DS in such a category, only consoles. Maybe because it can also be a learning tool. I discovered later some of my friends that adamantly denied liking games were die-hard addicts of Mario on their DS.

But based only on my own experience, "hardcore gaming" is no where near as popular in Japan as it is in North America. Then again, I didn't go out of my way looking for gamers due to not having a firm enough grasp on the language.

I agree fully with MMM.

Just as long as you're grounded you should be fine. I think that in most places of the world, obsessive "nerds" are shunned (more or less) by many..
I'm not saying that's not bad, just that it's how it is.

Although in my experience having a "nerdy" interest aint something that one gets so much grief over. I just think that people often thinks obsession is un-healthy in some way, and also they usually don't want people to try and "convert" them.

I think Japan is kinda similar. Sure they have lots of "cartoons", and people of all ages read them. But anime isn't like bugs bunny, and all japanese people aint otakus (even if they read a few mangas).

Most of the cosplay type of people you would see at Harajuku are not considered normal by any standard by other japanese people.
In America many people feel the same about Emos and Goths.

All of the ques of people I saw in Akihabara waiting for an autograph or free poster and CD from an Anime game or show were men over 25 years old. I never once saw a woman in one of these ques although it was always a woman signing the CD's and promo flyers.

Also be aware that your favorite anime/games will be 100% in Japanese although you can buy some manga that has been translated.
