Bar question (Tokyoites look here)

I know there's a lot of threads about clubbing etc in Japan. But this question is much more specific, so I think it deserves a thread of its own.

I want you to give me suggestions for a bar / bars in Tokyo that fulfills these criteria (or something along the lines):

* Central location (as in not out in Saitama or anythiing)
* Cheap bear (Well as cheap as possible)
* Preferably more than like three sorts of beer to choose from (this one is less important)
* People. As in, I want a place that usually is filled with people, and not an abandoned bar with 1 guy and his dog. I'd rather it were a mixed crowd (some of the "irish" pubs and whatnot are 95% gaijins, which is kinda boring)
* Size. The size of the place is not so important, I don't need the place to be a stadium. Small bars does often have a very nice feeling to them, in my experience.

Please, help me :)

Only place I can think of by name is Gas Panic in Shibuya, there's one in Ropponngi as well. It's a Reggae / Hip Hop bar. We went on a weekday and the place was packed. I know they had more than one beer on tap and bottles, don't remember the price cuz I was pretty drunk by the time we got there. Good mix of people. The place was kind of on the small side.

GASPANIC

My favorite bar in Japan is in Osaka

There's a little dive under the train tracks in Yurakucho which is famous because the owner and "mastaa" is an American. He has been running it for over 10 years and says he is there to stay. The beer is cheap and the otsumami is cheap, fresh and delicious. Can't remember the name of the place though.

Seems interesting! Worth looking up. If you remember the name, please tell me.

How about bars in Shibuya, know of any good spots? Was at the dubliners a few days ago, nicely located but around 850 for the cheapest pint wasn't "jippie!", especially when they got like 4-5 types of beers in total (at an "irish" pub, wth?).

i thought he was british.
the place is called 新日の基 (しんひのもと).
there is a really good place in harajuku/omotesando called ゆかり or あかり i think, can't remember which.

Henbaka 10-09-2008 12:11 PM

Cool. Thanks for the name.

Where in haraj/omotes. ?

blimp 10-09-2008 02:18 PM

Google Maps

walk north along the tracks, take a right at the サンキュービル. walk another 20 metres and u should see it on ur left. brownish wooden building just at the beginning of the slop.

if u zoom in around the サンキュービル the building hosting ゆかり will show up.

well, come to think of it....it's not a bar, its an izakaya.
it got two floors, not very small but not extremely big either. punk staff (as in the fashion/music style). fairly cheap i reckon, at least cheap for someone working. it won't ruin u.

Ait, thanks for the info, but I don't think I'll bother then as I wasn't really looking for izakaya's :) But thanks nonetheless for your help!

Sheesha Bar in ropongi is my favorite, my friend Hiro works there.
Its down the street from gaspanic. on Floor 7.

has a private kareoki room also.

if your looking for Cheap in tokyo then you've gone to the wrong place lol.

if its cheap its usually empty and dieing for customers.

just walk the main strip of any area and go bar hopping. thats the fun of Tokyo

Henbaka 10-13-2008 04:55 AM

That is fun!

But it would be cool to find a really sweet "hangout" place though (that doesn't ruin you) ;)

That's the real key...and you will. I lived in Japan over a decade ago, but I still visit my "hangout" bar a couple times every time I go back. A lot of the same customers who I got to be friends with still go, and I can hang with the owner/bartender if it isn't busy.

Look for "shot bars"...especially ones with music you like. It'll give you something to talk with the owner about, even if your Japanese isn't so good. Shot bars tend to be small, no or low cover, and easy to chill out in.
