This definitely depends on your body type and where you come from. Kyoto is supposedly one of the more humid areas of Japan during the summer.
As for my experience... I prefer wearing shorts. I also like T-shirs, but found that when it's really hot and I did a lot of walking, my shirt would get soaked in sweat. To counter this, I like to wear light colors and an undershirt when possible. The undershirt will make it slightly hotter though, but it will catch most of you sweat. Some people like Sandals, I like short socks and tennis shoes (as good walking shoes will help if you are walking a lot). There are also a lot of mosquitos, so if you don't like getting bitten in the feet, shoes help. Places are air conditioned... so don't be afraid to take a break and walk into a convenience store to get something to drink (like aquarius or another sports drink that will replenish your sodium lost from sweating). Some people like to wear backpacks, and they certainly are convenient... but they can make your back that much hotter and heavier. When you can, travel as lightly as you can (and you might want to bring an extra shirt wherever you go if you sweat a lot). I think fanny packs are considered as lame in Japan as they are in America, but they have other small man-purse-ish things that don't seem to be looked down upon... you might use one of those to help carry things (such as coins... you will need something to hold your coins in, as you will build a collection in a hurry while traelling). Quick list: 1. Pack light on trips where you will be walking. 2. Wear light clothing (color and weight-wise) 3. Wear an under shirt if you sweat a lot 4. Avoid backpacks but consider a small pouch 5. Shorts! 6. Sunscreen (if you burn easily) 7. Muhi ムヒ(you put it on mosquito bites) 8. Good walking shoes (that are easy to take on and off) 9. Make frequent stops in well-airconditioned convenience stores (for drinks/breaks) 10. Coin-case/pouch (which can easily be purchased in Japan.) 11. Handkercheif (to dry your hands off with/wipe sweat off your face with). |

Whenever it's hot in Japan -

The best cure for the hot and humid summers (and rainy days) in Japan is... shopping!
Of course there are plenty of other things as well, but Japanese consumerism is definitely interesting. Department stores like the Tokyu Hands - Shopping for a Creative Life - can provide hours of pleasure and lots of good gifts to bring back home. Shrine/temple hopping would be quite difficult on hot days, so I'd keep that to a minimum. |
