Drinking Glasses

I posted this image over in the Language Help forum to ask for assistance in translating the characters on this drinking glass.

My question for this forum is more about the material surrounding the glass. Is this bamboo? Is it common for stylized drinking glasses to be wood wrapped?? If yes, can you point me to where I might find more???

This glass set was recently bequeathed to me by my parents who lived in Tokyo from 1948 to 1965.

Thanks in advance.

I have never seen a glass like this, so I wouldn't say it is common.

Square wood "cups" called "masu" are one traditional vessel for drinking sake, but seem more ceremonial now.

Thanks for your feedback.

I provided the additional color at the behest of another forum member. Maybe vintage glasses like this are no longer produced.

Cheers!

I remember seeing glasses like that back inthe 1960's (my parents took me to bars with them once in a while). Usually it was in themed restaurants her in the states like Trader Vic's. If "tiki" was in the name or the decorations, they often had highball glasses and ones like the one in the pic that had woven rattan in the lower portion for decoration and/or better grip when wet from condensation. I haven't seen any like that in decades, though.
