I have never seen a glass like this, so I wouldn't say it is common.
Square wood "cups" called "masu" are one traditional vessel for drinking sake, but seem more ceremonial now. |

I remember seeing glasses like that back inthe 1960's (my parents took me to bars with them once in a while). Usually it was in themed restaurants her in the states like Trader Vic's. If "tiki" was in the name or the decorations, they often had highball glasses and ones like the one in the pic that had woven rattan in the lower portion for decoration and/or better grip when wet from condensation. I haven't seen any like that in decades, though.
