Fashion Designers.

I wanna be a fashion designer when I'm older. Does anyone else?
Are there any fashion designers out there in JF land?

I like to draw/design every now and then..but I've never made anything >_>

I'd love to be a designer, and get paid to just draw rather then make anything. Lol.

Emmiechan 10-13-2008 12:48 AM

i love drawing and designing, i've made armsleeves, but that's about it
i want to get a sewing machine but..
1) i dunno how to sew
2) very expensive.....

Housetek 10-13-2008 12:49 AM

I am, i work for a small custom clothing company called trust truth and trinh.

few of my suits design pics are floating around some where in JF=)

but best way to do it if you really are dedicated is this.

1. go to school for it obviously
2. pick what field you want to generalize in and specialize in
3. intern at MANY places, and yes they WILL work you hard until you build some experience.
4. NEVER EEEEVER let any one keep a Portfolio resume. only paper resumes.
Portfolio resumes often get stolen and used.
*hot topic and urban outfitters are NOTORIOUS for stealing intern/applicant portfolios*
5. its a very hard industry if you are pasionate about it dont give up.

remember to be a designer you are going into a HIGHLY competitive and constantly changing work environment.

this industry is highly organic so you have to adapt well and learn to collaborate with others well.

Good luck!

Good luck for future of fashion designer ^^

I design menswear for a fairly prominent brand in Australia (which shall remain anonymous). I first started there in a general admin roll and soon progressed into an assistant designer role.

I went to fashion school but i think what really got me the position was just working hard from the bottom ranks of the company and impressing management with my dedication etc...

And for the poster who said that sewing machines are expensive, they certainly can be but they can also be cheap if you get a very basic one or even a second hand one from ebay. And sewing is easy to learn with the assistance of the internet, books or if you are lucky to know someone who knows how it will only take a few lessons until you become confident.

I am heavily influenced by japanese fashion - a few of my favorite Japanese designers/labels are Diet Butcher Slim Skin, Julius, Lad Musician and of course the more comercial Issey, Comme and Junya...

iamwhatiam 10-16-2008 09:59 AM

ME!!!! i do! i love clothes. and shoes! and purses... and belts... and more shoes.

waytolove 10-16-2008 01:50 PM

I also love design, I used to design card to give to my friends on their birthday. I also design woof stuff to stick to my clothes. It is fun and creative :)

gloomth 10-16-2008 07:32 PM

Hello.

I am a professional designer. I run a company called Gloomth & the Cult of Melancholy (website). :)

Aota 10-16-2008 08:27 PM

Mmm... I have quite a few designs laid out, but no knowledge on how to produce them. Er, I do... But I don't have resources. :\

I want to mix the genres of punk, and visual kei, but make it comfortable and elastic to the wearer.

I do design some clothes, but they often are just for me. Sometimes I design clothes for friends too. I also make clothes wich that I design.

I think it is really enjoyable to do beautifull things.

i like that. i do that too.

hideki11 10-22-2008 10:12 AM

I love fashion designing and it's my frustration to design clothes and bags but I don't have that confidence to launch a clothing line that's why I'm putting a clothing business because I don't want to feel left alone just for thinking about my frustrations and focus to my forte...

OddyStrix 10-22-2008 07:13 PM

i like putting outfits together more so than i do making them

CarleyGee 10-22-2008 08:11 PM

I wanted to be a fashion designer once, just because I was fed up that I couldn't
find any clothes that I liked! I figured I would just make my own. Well, I decided I'll just
wear whatever I can find : )

Project runway is a joke and does not depict a typical designer role well at all. Succeeding on that show doesn't mean you can be a successful designer, and vice versa, if you cant make it on that show doesn't mean anything.

xYinniex 12-12-2008 01:52 PM

MEH. I can sew btuttong back on, But i was always crap at textiles and clothes designing, I was sooo much better at cooking. [at our school we had an option of textiles VS food tech]

bhl88 12-12-2008 03:46 PM

There should be a forum for fashion designing XD

MissMisa 12-16-2008 11:56 AM

In our school we have a resident designer and she's a fashion designer. She said I could be one if I wanted to be but it's not really something I'm really interested in.

bhl88 12-17-2008 03:56 AM

Who here can teach fashion design anyway? Then set up a thread for lessons to those interested :heh:

There are schools to teach design skills you cant pick up proper skill/technique for real design on a forum. :s

Do you mean like sewing tutorials and such?

bhl88 12-19-2008 05:08 AM

More like sewing skills, design skills, etc.

AestheteHistory 12-28-2008 08:29 AM

I would love to be a fashion designer but if it is something I am going to pursue I think it would be something on the side because I am pursuing teaching English as a foreign language as my career. Also I would need to work on my sewing skills because they are sad.

SpectralHarlequin 12-28-2008 06:16 PM

um..I like to make crap with other crap I find in my room.

Like this hand-made bow-tie... : \

It's obvious that the beads were put on by my amateur hands. I don't really care though, that it looks "unprofessional" because it was something I made to pass the time and enjoy myself. I also like to crochet a lot. *left-handed...*

OH~ ...I feel stupid now... This is supposed to be a place for Japanese fashions... not...some American...from..some state...in the west...who likes to make "fashionable" crap in their spare time.

I think this is a very cute bow so what if it looks "professional" if you like it that’s what matters unless you’re trying to sell an item

AnimeBaby112 12-29-2008 01:06 AM

Cute bow. I like it.

SpectralHarlequin 12-29-2008 12:11 PM

Um..yeah, I guess you're right. I don't sell any of my things, so whether or not it's appearance is appealing to the public is not something for me to put much thought into.

I just always wanted to have my own little bow-tie! :D

...and I'm glad that some of you like it. Thanks.

craftscn 12-31-2008 05:49 AM

What industry are you want to be? jewelry or craft

if you want to be one designer, which industry are you want to be? i want to be in fashion jewelry or handicrafts, that's very attractive career.

HIalchemist 12-31-2008 06:33 AM

what's your income?
And whoa, hot topic steals ideas? How do they get 'em?

animemaga 01-13-2009 04:53 AM

My clothesline (which is not actually out and selling yet) is called p.l.uK. which stands for Petite Lolita Kerrelo. It's designed for younger or smaller people who like the lolita fashion. (that includes me because all the sites I go on have too big sizes) I design lolita clothes and not lolita clothes all the time except when I'm doing something else.

allie2590 01-13-2009 05:09 AM

Fashion design is definately something I'd like to try, but I wouldn't make a career out of it. I love to draw clothes and accessories, but I have yet to actually make any of my designs.

jewelpre 01-13-2009 05:28 PM

Yeap, I am very interested . I am from USA and I would like to explore that area, but I am already have a profession so its really difficult to switch , so I created my website to help designer.

Its called myclozet.

Pexster 01-13-2009 05:54 PM

Im goin' to A.I (art institute)(in L.A) for that. ^^

I think they have people that go to places like clubs and take pictures of people with hand made clothes and stuff.
