GYARU style definition.

I thought I would make this thread because a lot of people don't know how to distinguish between the different CURRENT Gyaru trends, or actually know any of them apart from Ganguro.

ギャル系・ GYARU-KEI

General style, which doesn't require a tan, although most gals have one.
Fashions can be worn by both Ganguro (tanned Gals) or Ganjiro (untanned Gals).
Has many sub-categories.

ギャル男・ GYARU-OH

Male counterpart of Gyaru.
Hair is often in a mullet style, ranging from light brown to silver to pink!
Usual clothes are clubwear, sweats with tank tops or a stylish jeans + tank top + open shirt combo. They don't wear makeup but are usually well tanned, although a tan isn't a requirement.

マンバ)・ MANBA

The updated version of Yamamba. Manba has evolved since 2004, when it featured a lot of hawaiian prints, leis, face stickers and pastel-coloured hair. The style now has much thicker white makeup, brighter and more varied coloured eyeshadow, light to extreme panda makeup, coloured eyelashes and diamantes around the eyes. Clothing ranges from neon clubwear to sweat suits, but no longer includes the hawaiian accessories or hude amounts of stickers under the eyes. Hair tends to be bright, flourescent colours or blonde and is cut in a mullet style or braided.

姫ギャル・ HIMEGYARU

Meaning Princess GAL it is a style characterized by pink make-up and long eyelashes as well as either tan or very light skin. Huge hair in a bouffant/beehive is practically the uniform. Lots of fur and rich materials as well as lace and velvet are common. High heels are always a must, as well as a good structured handbag preferably white, black, or pink. Animal prints as well as rhinestones, roses, orchids, and other flowers

There are many many more styles that I haven't mentioned such as banba, sentaa etc. I thought it was best to keep with these to start with and if people want to know more I am happy to post again.

HAHA well I wasn't going to post the wrong info. I thought it was best not to overpower people with information, since a lot of people on here are new to Gyaru :p

Thanks :rheart:

Enough info for me! Thanks, Bloomzy. At least I found it informative.

Bloomzy 08-07-2007 06:20 PM

^^ No problem :D

ButterflyDemise 08-07-2007 08:46 PM

Thank you for explaining each type~ I thought it was all lugged into one thing. haha. I really like all the versions (now), and the male Gyaru-Oh looks much better than I remember~! (^^)

Housetek 08-11-2007 10:20 AM

good explanations

there all fun to look at, but still note. these style make up a small fraction of the style in japan.

out of the THOUSANDS of people you will pass on any given day you'll prolly only be able to pick out a handfull of these styles.

Unless you are in shibuya or harajuku and what not, and even then its very few amount of people who dress like this.

Bloomzy 08-11-2007 01:24 PM

Even so it's my fashion and the fashion of a lot of my friends.
I just hope people can be interested in it and feel they have learnt something new:rheart:

Housetek 08-11-2007 03:04 PM

AHH attack of Manba! ><
Manba/Ganguro scare me so much, aiyoo ~

But wow! Himegyaru looks so cute <3

Aleesunz 08-14-2007 11:21 PM

Yay! Hurrah for thee guide. I kind of got the feeling that not many people knew about Gyaru on this forum. Not trying to offend anyone, but it sounds like it's mainly jRock/VK fans here.

Alsooo - I looove thee Himegyaru/Himegal look <3 And I have so many picturds of the same girl you used as your example ;__; XD

Also, Manba kind of grosses me out. D: I'm sorry but, bleeh, not my thing.

I prefer Oneegyaru and Gangiro <3

I know what you mean. It seems like 90% of the forum is made up of JRock fans. But oh well, we can represent the miniority:p

Himegyaru is so feminine and it really is amazingly cute. I think it's something that would most definitely make you feel like a princess. I know I do when I add a bit of hime to my fashion:rheart:

I'm not a fan of manba although I think the girls of Angeleek etc. are gorgeous and the skill of their makeup is very talented.

I myself prefer Ganjiro, but I will probably move onto Oneegyaru in a couple of years.

I didn't know that there were so many forms of Gyaru! Thanks for sharing! :pinksong:

I think they're all cute, but it's definitely not the style for me...I'm just not suited for that. Oshare Kei for me! :vsign:

Lets get back onto gyaru.

the gyaru mags are out with autum fashion. Seems that it's going to be 'rock' this winter for girls this year.

I quote: Haaady PUNK & GLAM DEVIL & Heavy BLACK

Also denim but when is denim out of fashion ever?

oh yes the dokurous are gonna be back. I hope it means the gyaruo fashion is going to go back a bit to the rock style of last winter (what couples don't want to match?!), that was so hot and I wasn't a fan of the 'surfer casual' of this summer.
