What is your favorite Japanese food?

Mine would have to be Sushi

I live off of it.

That might just be a coincidence. I felt the same about tiramisu, the Italian dessert made with coffee and cream and all sorts of delicious things. I was violently sick after eating it once and didn't try it again for years because of the association in my mind. But I tried it again and loved it. It's a shame it contains so many calories, which I really don't need.

I've only tried unagi once. It was in the freezer section of my local Chinese supermarket. It was rather nice, but smothered in a suace which masked the taste of it, I think. And I was hoping it would be a bit more chewy, like the jellied eels you can get in London, or like calamari. :)

yuujirou 06-27-2008 06:59 AM

hmm......
madai x]
that is absolutely scrumptious~ <3

madai = japanese snapper

it has the cleanest and most refreshing taste ever <3
and i would kill too have one all too myself <3 x]
shame it's so expensive though ;_;

(often revered as one of the best sushi items in japan)

xYinniex 06-27-2008 11:01 AM

I rarely have it
But I'm sooo in love with Ootoro. It's the most expensive part of the tuna but it's so goood.

I have an expensive taste, I know
ikura/ootoro. XDD

Cirth 06-27-2008 03:53 PM

it looks horrible on the picture, but apparently it's called Tako Yaki.... is it really squid with mayo?? I know I also like fried squid, but this one is one of the best food experiences I had in Tokyo....soooo.... yup :p I ate it at some temple and man...awesome ^^

xYinniex 06-27-2008 11:21 PM

Takoyaki- thats like diced octopus in dough balls with sauce- mayo/Japanese brown sauce.

Its sooo heavenly.
I have never tried any proper japanese ones
but oddly enough, some sushi bars sell takoyaki, despite it being usual street food.

That is odd. You'd lose all your customers if you did that here in Japan. That's like publicly admitting that your sushi don't sell well. Formally-trained sushi chefs would surely refuse to make takoyaki, too. I love takoyaki but I'd hate to smell takoyaki while eating sushi.

It's true. Ramen originally comes from China. I don't know why almost everyone on JF seems to think it's Japanese food. Most Japanese still consider it to be Chinese food, and we actually go to Chinese restaurants to eat ramen here in Japan.

Yes, dorayaki is a popular Japanese snack.

kiroshime 07-22-2008 05:46 AM

Ramen and rice balls ^^

SSJup81 07-22-2008 07:38 AM

Right now, my favorite Japanese food is sukiyaki.

Udon is a Japanese noodle and it's often served cold. In the summer, some places serve udon with ice cubes, yes.

It's very tongue tingling spicey:mtongue:

YUMMMMMMMMMMMMMYYYYYYY:D

If you like chilli, make sure you pick the Korean made pot from the local supermarket, not the Japanese.

I found the Japanese Kim Chi was a very poor substitute lacking flavour.

An easy dinner.

Fried Gyoza. Use Sesame Oil, White Vinegar and Soy Sauce mixed for sauce.

A bowl of rice.

Some Kim-Chi in a seperate bowl.

A bowl of Miso

Wash it all down with a nice cold glass of OOlong (spelling) tea:)
