American Corheeeee! What does it mean?

This struck me one day when I ventured into a small store in Nara for brunch.

I was with my American colleague and I said "Dave, what the hell is American coffee". He didn't know..

So what is it? Does it mean weak coffee?

Is branding food and beverage items in Asia "American" a "normal" thing?

I can only imagine what may come next..

"George Bush Lemon Juice"

"Obama Cola"

"Cruise Missile Tea"

"M-16 Beer"

etc.

It's just weaker coffee served in a larger cup. Doesn't mean the beans are from America.

Thanks Nago:)

I can't stand weak coffee..

Good Italian brew is my choice...

I just can't understand why in Japan things have to be associated with America.

Original meaning of アメリカンコーヒー is "Light Roasted Coffee" because common coffee in USA was lighter roasted than European one. (This fact was true before Starbucks.)

Most of common Japanese misinterpret American coffee as weaker coffee because it is less bitter than dark roasted coffee.

Thank you for clearing that up. Very interesting.

The first time I actually saw a Starbucks was in Japan. It soon became my regular pick up coffee before work shop. The coffee seemed reasonable and one or two pastries were satisfactory.

American coffee tends to use cheaper blends, and different roasts.. Maybe due to the MASSIVE quantities in which we drink the stuff.. I know people that drink several pots a day.
