Durian - in Japan (and worldwide)

I wonder is Durian ever make it to Japan or even popular.
Durian - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

for me as a SE asianers, Durian is delicious!!! :mtongue:

To a lot of people outside of SE Asia, durian is the only fruit that can be used as a weapon.

Nagoyankee 10-22-2009 04:54 AM

Durian certainly has made it to Japan......as a batsu-game food item on TV shows.

Seriously, though, it's only available in selected stores. It isn't something they carry at regular supermarkets.

Weapon is right. Painful projectile and very effective repellent for most of us with a sense of smell.

It very available in Texas, though I don't know if its grown anywhere near here. The local markets have it fresh and then all sorts of prepared food with it. Despite a serious dislike for the fresh stuff, I tried a durian pudding about a year ago. It took serious containment efforts to even make the garage with the trash can bearable once that stuf was opened.

I tried Durian, and I wasn't terribly impressed, but no, I never saw it in Japan. It's quite an acquired taste.

I think it was Malaysia where they had "no smoking, no dogs, no durian" stickers on the buses. Cracked me up.

A man on the travel channel that eats bizzare foods ate one and said it was the only food he had ever tried that he did not likelol

jurianbai 10-23-2009 01:13 AM

But now Durian flavour make it to many other forms. Durian ice cream, Durian cake, and now most popular Durian moon cake. Very prestigious here in Singapore.

Undertherose25 10-23-2009 02:52 AM

Ah yes the smelly fruit, I've never tried it since the smell is rather repulsive and I like to stand as far away from it as possible. But I know a few people who can't live without it.

YoshimiTheEthereal 10-23-2009 05:09 AM

I've never even heard of it . . . I'd like to see one in real life!

Columbine 10-23-2009 10:23 AM

I think Durian must be like the fruit version of marmite in Asia. You either love it or hate it.

Actually, I did eat durian chips and they weren't bad.

onlybyron 10-23-2009 04:42 PM

ive not heard of this XD but the shell looks rather like the shell of a conker here in england XD and yes the shell is used as a weapon here XDD the shell in the picture looks like a hedgehog to me.... but the hedgehog is green O_O
:gkitty:

Durian was truly delicious..
I was surprised to know that people did not want to try it since other people rated it poor??

nobora 10-24-2009 04:03 AM

I think that is a good comparison and we can add natto for Japanese foods. I have never known anyone to be neutral about marmite, durian or natto.
Because I love natto and the other two repulse me, I can empathize with those who like the others and despise natto.

Hmmm, do the chips have the "aroma" (stench)? If not, I would try them.

I`m neutral about all 3, so now you know of someone. :D
I will eat marmite/vegemite if available on occasion (hotels?), but see no need to purchase it. Can`t say I really like it, but also cannot say I dislike it.
Durian is alright, but nothing to rave about. If I get one or something durian flavored as a gift I`ll eat it - but wouldn`t bother with it myself.
Natto is alright, but also nothing to bother with buying. If it`s there I`ll eat it, otherwise not.

Durian ? Never head about it... but if I understand correclty.. it must have been a not so nice smell or taste... O.o

Columbine 11-18-2009 04:48 PM

In the spirit of investigation, my mum bought me some 'durian cake' from London. It's 88% Durian fruit flesh pureed with 12% sugar. Basically a tube of durian fruit paste.

It didn't smell much; i'd kept it chilled, and it had a very faint apple-ish scent overlaid with something I couldn't identify. It tasted... really, really quite rancid. Like fetid old Camembert. I chewed determinedly for a while to see if it improved at all. I then gagged and spat it down the toilet and hastily brushed my teeth wailing, "Oh god, oh god, that is DISGUSTING!"

I'm willing to admit that maybe it wasn't good quality or very fresh which might have affected the flavor, but I don't think I'll be trying it again. Blech...

MilKyXxdreamXx 11-18-2009 11:31 PM

i think durian is okay, the flavor is not bad. i think durian actually smells nice ~ hehe
i know that for ppl who doesn't eat it; is because it smells. although it may have a strong fragrance, the taste of it isn't bad .
it's like those food that for some it smell really bad to ppl, but when it's eaten, you will change your mind of your perspective. i'll say it goes the same for durian.
i've known ppl i've come across with online and online friends who are in malaysia. 99.9% of them love durian. it's very very popular in malaysia, that's why they even have a durian festival there too, i think.

jurianbai 11-19-2009 01:57 AM

and to make thing more interesting there are many durian styles (variety). try once maybe not enough, you need to do it again!
