Is zis true? If you mix pudding and soy sauce does it make something that tastes like sea urchin?

I have never tried it, but it looks like true. I found a tasting report:
http://members.at.infoseek.co.jp/rimssecret/pudding.htm

Other combinations I found are:
Cucumber + honey = cantaloupe
Yogurt + tofu = rare cheese cake
many more are listed…
食欲の秋にケンカをうってみる

Sorry that the links are all in Japanese.

I've never tried it myself but some people do say that. Important thing is when a Japanese person says "pudding", s/he means a flan.

uni!

My student has tried it and she told me it was true!

IamKira 01-14-2010 08:50 AM

well, if you mix chili powder and water it tastes like tea

This kind of goes along the line of honey on cucumber tastes like melon, soaking cheap fish in mayonnaise tastes like toro, etc...

It doesn`t REALLY taste like it. It`s kind of "Now that you say it, I can kind of see the resemblance!" Or "It has a similar texture!"

and if you mix pessimism with crazy guys like me it sort of tastes like a big medical bill and lots of gauze :D

I am not going to ruin good flan by trying it, but somehow it doesn't seem like the flavors would mix to that result. But the look and texture could be very close.

To me there is an underlying taste of algae and moss to most uni that would be missing in that combination.

Question; What exactly IS 'pudding'? The stuff used to make 'uni' to me looks something like a creme caramel, but obviously I can't really tell from the picture.

When I think of pudding i'm heading for that British umbrella term that generally means desserts. Especially steamed ones. As for flan; that to me is the kind with a pastry or sponge cake base. Kind of like a fruit pie without a lid.

Flan is a spanish custard (faintly vanilla) with a glazing of caramelized sugar (no milk).
