I second the rice cooker. My Zojirushi rice cooker makes perfect rice every time. Also, you have to be using Japonica rice. Other short grains may work, but Japonica rice is the kind they use in Japan (obviously) and is characterized by its slightly sweet taste and sticky quality. You can also buy onigiri presses that shape the rice ball perfectly for you - no need to do it by hand, and they're dirt cheap.

try buying sushi rice from an asian market, it looks like tiny almost flat peices of something..>< wash it until the water is translucent. After cooking, fluff your rice but not too much or the sticky consistency will dissapear. wet ur hands good with water. put a huge glop of rice in ur hand and start to make a balll shape, then make ur hands perpendicular and form the triangle shape. lightly salt the onigiri and wrap in seaweed. u can also burn some salmon to put inside.

by burn, i mean fry but use VERY LITTLE oil.

Rice balls

Can anyone explain rice balls to me....I seriously want to make some...help needed:confused:

Uriko 12-19-2007 04:15 AM

cook rice then make it into a ball! ..at least, that's how they do it in the anime. v_v

Sphinx01 12-19-2007 06:21 PM

that easy huh...

Nyororin 12-19-2007 07:17 PM

You salt the rice, and roll it into a compacted ball. Most people squish it a bit, then flatten it partly and put some sort of filling in it, then roll the ball around that.
It`s also pretty normal to wrap a sheet of nori around the outside.

That sounds pretty good. Before I had some sort of potato ball from Japan , it is treat over there, but did not like it too much. I had a weird texture and taste, but the rest of my family really liked it.

Sphinx01 12-19-2007 07:27 PM

Oh thank you all...you wonderful people!!!!

SSJup81 12-22-2007 05:30 AM

I just learned how to make onigiri last week in class. I made one with Salmon. The other one with a tuna/soy/Japanese mayo mix and we wrapped it in Nori. It's very easy to prepare, although, I haven't tried it on my own yet. I don't know how to make sticky rice and don't own a rice cooker or steamer to make things easier for me.

Seems that once you get the hang of making it, it comes easier and you can experiment with it.

Onigiri(Rice ball) is pretty easy to do, but you need to be careful when you cook the rice.

My mom bought a rice cooker a few months back and I made onigiri for my family. I bought some sushi rice and followed the instructions on the bag which were pretty simple. Then I just made up a filling since you can put just about anything into them. I cut steak into small pieces and sauted it with green bell peppers, onions, and bean sprouts which I had also cut up. then when I made the the rice balls I put about a spoonful of the mixture into them. It was really great!
:D

Hyakushi 01-17-2008 01:54 AM

The rice takes a while to make, but rice balls are easy to make.
Unless your trying to do something unusual, like fry them.

Ichigo2013 01-18-2008 12:48 AM

I'm learning to make these too! I'm going to Borders tomorrow to get a Japanese Cook Book. I have Rice, Salt, Udon Noodles, and Ramen, but I need to get more! And make BENTOS! I love Japanese food, and I need to learn to cook, because in my dream relationship I cook for my dream girl! :rheart: :D :p

Konan134 01-20-2008 02:03 AM

i like sweet onigiri (like tohru! ^.^)

Jessica91 01-20-2008 11:04 AM

I really want to make some onigiri for lunch tomorrow. It'll be my first time and I'm so worried that I might screw up cos I'm making them for my sister as well! But thanks for the website, at least I make blindly make them!

Generu 01-20-2008 06:58 PM

I made some onigiri for lunch for my sisters and I yesterday. A couple of them fell apart, but other than that it was good. I stuffed them with some tofu teriyaki chicken and it tasted really good.

SakanaMidori 01-20-2008 08:41 PM

HAHAHAHA!!

how Ironic!

I had onigiri for breakfast! (although it was around noon when I had this "breakfast")

They sell these packages at Marukai(
HTML Code:

www.marukai.com
).

You just make the rice, stick in whatever you want in the middle, place the rice and your filling on the mat they give you(it's filled with nori) and wrap up the rice in a triangle shape and hold it down with a bright orange sticker that comes with the nori. Then come back to it when you wanna eat it, upwrap it by the pullstring type thing it has, and carefully peal off the plastic.

It works pretty well and you don't need salt or tezu or anything. But I forgot to put in the ume I was gonna put in the middle, so I went without.

And, for the record, I made a plushie in the shape of onigiri!
It's very cute!

XxMadBomberxX 01-21-2008 04:31 AM

Onigiri? I love onigiri. I had my very first one the other day. It was very good :3

Yuna7780 01-21-2008 05:06 AM

You must get SHORT-length rice and it will stick together after you salt it. Put whatever you want inside and put some seaweed wrap-stuff on so the contents inside don't spill out randomly! :) Enjoy.

Anyone for Onigiri?

Matley 02-11-2008 03:17 PM

I'm from Italy and bread is THE thing I can't do without in my diet.
Yes, that's my fundamental food.
While in Japan I found onigiri are a great substitute.

Sinner 02-11-2008 05:39 PM

Am I the only one here who think sushi is a little bit boring?
It's very good but still a little bit boring..

No offense, but there are faster and easier ways to find things out than asking here.

Different than what?

Sinner 02-14-2008 03:09 PM

You can always use google.

DragonShade 02-14-2008 05:26 PM

Thanks mina san! I googled it too, but it seems that the onigiri varies in flavor. I wonder if they add some ingredient to make it taste more than just rice and salt

MMM 02-14-2008 05:31 PM

Did you even read the links we sent you?
