Anyone for Onigiri?
I'm going to make Onigiri next week... what fillings are good?
|
高菜!!!!!
Or... カルビ. |

Thank you ^__^ Karubi sounds nice... =] |
Ummm.....What's Onigiri ? I've heard of it many times. But have no idea what it is.
|
I love tuna.
ツナ、おいしいよね。 Onigiri is a rice ball. |
lol :o Oh yeah, I remember now. I should have known.....
What is the typical filling for a rice ball? How is it made? Do they just take the filling and compact rice around it? |

Oh I see now. It's a pretty basic procedure. I heard some say tuna. Is that a popular filling? I have also seen jelly inside a riceball. Is that common? Or it could have appeared to be jelly. And could easily be something else.
|
i love tuna, and chicken mayo.. yummy...
|
I`ve never heard of jelly..... Are you sure you`re thinking of onigiri and not mochi? I can imagine jelly in mochi, but never in an onigiri.
Personally, I don`t like tuna ones. The tuna gets weird and the whole onigiri gets funkily soggy. |
i like tuna or that katsuobushi stuff
|
Prawn mayo, oshinko, umeboshi, salmon
|
I like sake (salmon) in ... yummmmy
|
i had one that was chicken with teriyaki sauce! yummy XD
|
Vienna sausage in teriyaki sauce.
|
As already mentioned before, syake, yakiniku, tuna mayo, fish eggs (forgot what this was called in Japanese) and umeboshi are the popular ones.
Also, i recommend Omusubi or a mixture of omusubi and onigiri. Omusubi is like adding furikake-like flakes in rice and mixing it together. I personally like this better as it has more flavors to it. BTW, use the plastic wrap to make and store onigiri/omusubi. I find that to be much easier. |
yakiniku gotta love teh meat <3
|
I agree with the people that said karubi and chicken mayo. Those are 2 of my favorites. There was another that was some salted fish, but I don't remember what it was called.
|
I'm sorry - I'm new to Japanese cooking....
How does one make a rice ball? I realize that the rice needs to be sticky for this, but I'm a bit confused as to the procedure... ---Rei |
I've heard it needs to be short grain rice. But I've never seen it in stores. I only find long or medium grain. I don't really know why or how this makes a difference.

Onigiri Help
Hello. I need some help. I'm looking to find how to make onigiri, like a good website for it. I also heard that you need small grain for it, but can you make it with large grain and whatnot?
You can also e-mail me it, so I don't need to keep checking back here every day. xD Or IM me. I'm on a lot of the time. Thanks much! -Sai-chan :pinkbow: ~Thank you~:pinkbow: |
YouTube - How to make Onigiri
I'm not sure if you can make onigiri with long-grain rice. If it's sticky enough to be formed into balls in your hands, maybe yes... But do try short grain once as it's readily available in your country. We almost exclusively eat short-grain rice here in Japan. |

i am a terrible cook .. and luckily I make rice sticky by accident all the time ha ha!

Rice Balls
Can someone tell me in their words how they make their rice balls? The last lot I made were so disgusting and the time before that they wouldn't set properly, but it looked like I overcooked the rice.
I just want to know where I'm going wrong... it annoys me when I don't know how to cook stuff! Lol, o and the internet doesn't help me much, so don't tell me to look there =/ Thanks |
i dont know how but my mom does:o

you take some rice and shape it into a ball.. how much harder can it be??
of course you can add other things like furekaki to give it some flavor, but that is totally up to you. raverboy |

Echan, thanks for the link, but: Quote:

I can't believe you guys... Here's a video. But If you can't get short-grain rice where you live, forget about rice balls.

I did everything she did there... lol... except I had to cook my rice in a sauce pan. Maybe she used less salt than me, and I used a bean filling [like to experiment with food] too... I can't stand mayonaise!
I'll just have to try again, you never know I might get it this time, but I'll go and get some rice from the Chinese supermarket [along with some lychee juice, pocky and sandwich cookies, yums =P] on Saturday rather than using pudding rice. Thanks for the help everyone! =) |

You have to put quite a bit of effort into perfecting food. I'm a bit of a perfectionist and food freak and I have to say cooking seafood dishes is a lot easier than rice balls. [Used seafood as an example of a hard dish, because with no cooking instructions you have to guess when it's done based on trained site and the feel of it, whereas cooking things like chicken: if it's still bleeding and it's cold = not done] =P Can I ask how much food you actually do cook as well? Assuming you're still rather young and go to school/college, I haven't looked at your profile. I'm the only one that prepares and cooks my meals, I won't let my mom/dad do it, so I get a lot of practice in [I'm 17 and go to college studying academic subjesct, not cooking or anything like that] lol. I guess we all have our own little things we find difficult in the kitchen as well. |
like i said before, you're turning this little matter into something way out of proportion.
here's a suggestion because i won't want your hands to turn out looking like you just err..... you catch. next time, put a peice of saran wrap on the counter and place the rice in there, given you are making huge rice balls. use the saran wrap to surround the rice so it doesn't touch your hands and shape it into a ball. bing and you're done... raverboy |
No, I only make little ones... lol, I learnt from my huge ones not to make them that big, considering they don't fit in my lunch box. I'll just have to try again, but when I have time... too may essays to write at the moment.
|
I have made some before... I don't think they turned out quite right. They tasted okay but nothing special then again as I said I don't think I made them right.
|
here is rice ball recipe
|
I usually use a rice cooker, the rice just comes out better, and when i form the balls i make sure my fingers are wet with salt water to prevent the rice from sticking to my hands, The ones I make aren't very artisticly beautiful but the rice gets packed well. I can't describe it well, sorry @_@
