Japanese Food Suggestions For The Picky Eater

I'm going to Japan soon, but from what I hear, there's a lot of fish. Fish makes me sick to my stomach, as does all seafood. Does anyone know of some foods that I could survive on?

That's sad news as Japan is an island country. Are you just picky or do you biologically have an allergy to seafood? Those are two entirely different phenomena, you know.

The truth is that you will have a wide variety of foods available here, a much wider variety than most parts of your country can offer. So you can not only survive but can also enjoy the food scene in Japan.

One final note if you actually have an allergy. Even if you see no piece of fish in a dish, that doesn't mean fish isn't used because the stock is very often made with dried fish and/or seaweed. PM me if you actually have an allergy so I will write a note in Japanese (that is if you don't write Japanese) that you can show to waiters. You would need something like that from the first day you arrive here.

There are lots of non-fish Japanese foods, such as kara'age (Japanese fried chicken), tonkatsu (Japanese pork cutlet), yakisoba (Japanese chow mein), Yakiniku (grilled beef), curry, and ramen. Plus there are lots of Chinese restaurants in Japan where you can get all your favorites like broccoli beef or green onion pork. You should have no trouble finding non-fish alternatives in Japan.

There are lots of things you can eat other than Fish, theres fastfood everywhere you turn, ramen noodles, udon noodles, curry, just lots and lots of delicious stuff.

As far as what to stay away from, I would recommend staying away from Natto. Natto (fermented beans) is a gross sticky food that has been the bane of many a foreigner.

OMURICE.. omelette wrapped fried rice! it's pretty yummy, but for a vegetarian, ask for the omurice without demiglace sauce.

ramen/soba/udon: they're always available in veggie forms.

go to a japanese grocery store- cook your own food. i'm pretty sure, like other countries, they do sell normal veggies and groceries as well. At this point, by learning to cook with what you've bought, it's inevitable that you'll become a less picky eater. =]
