my comp doesn't recognize kana..... -

idk if this is a stupid question or not but i'm going to ask any way...does anyone know how to get my computer to recognize kana? all it shows are little boxes. it's fine with kanji though. it would help me alot in learning japanese if i could read the kana on language help sites......
