What are most intrested in getting started on first?
Unless you want me to give you a random word, like "tree". ^_^

Do you mean more like opposite, family, shapes, phrases, etc?

Kiyuge 01-16-2008 01:01 AM

Well mostly anything. But I would like to know some phrases on upholding a conversation and what not...

CarleyGee 01-16-2008 01:02 AM

Mmmmm, like trying to find your way around the city? Talking with friends?
Asking general information to people?

Rs. That's all that matters.
e

Welllll....not really.

But it's a biggy!

Like...if I ever met you in person and you we're like...saying Japanese Rs like English ones......or says A's like English ones.

Ah ee OO eh oh

a i u e o

And g's are always hard....

In "shi" and "ji" the i is pretty much silent(not entirely)

Hajmemashte(...it might as well be...)

U's are always silent unless there are two of them put together.

Or at the beginning of a word.

And r's...r's are Reeaaaaally hard!
(well, it took me a year in an all white environment)

It's a combonation of a d and an l, with a slight hint of an r.

Most books will tell you it's an L. It's not, but it's close.

What I did when I was first learning was Replace the R with a "d" If it came in the middle of a word "Udusai" and make it an "L" if it was at the beggining. "Lappa"

But, really, you place the tip of your tongue on the backside of your top teeth and release hastitly, almost rolling it.

らりるれろ
ラリルレロ

Other than that, I'm pretty sure everything is the same as it is in english.

Wait! Each syllable is clearly pronounced seperately. Not like in english when we make the "a" long and the "e" silent in words like "make."

But in....
"aoi" (blue)

It's "ah-oh-ee"

And it basically follows that....

Ganbatte!!

SakanaMidori 01-16-2008 01:28 AM

lol! Thanks!^^

It makes me feel all warm inside!

Yeah...erm...if you have Japanese American friends who speak it, you can always ask them.

And television.

I Looove television.

It's so helpful.

They say little phrases all the time!
(I'm talking Japanese here)

Like...if they're gonna eat, they'll say "Itadakimasu!" and you can look at the subtitle and it'll be like "I'm gonna eat now" or "thank you"(depending on context)

Or, if it's an action-y show and someone is found on the ground and someone else comes up and is like "Daijoubu ka?" and in the subtitle, it says "Are you okay/alright?"

Or "Yatta!" ("I/you did it!")

These small phrases are great for learning phrases(which I use all the time) and pronounciation. Because it's singled out as it's own little phrase, you can learn how to say it exactly as a native japanese speaker would.

Like I said, I love terebi!!
