I never said it wasn't similar ^^ i just said don't be caught out by those that are different. While many words are the same some words are considerably different meaning in Japanese, that is all i was pointing out.
i think when you say Ancient Chinese you are refering to the character set used in hong kong, taiwan etc which we call Traditional Chinese. The mainland system is known as Simplified Chinese (simplified has only been around since the CCP) Ancient Chinese scripts are different again from Traditional Chinese.
Also I agree with MMM knowing how to read japanese will not help you anywhere as much as being able to construct sentences. it is good to learn kanji and it should be encouraged just don't forget your grammar!
