i want to learn japanese, but it seems theres different types

where do i start and what type do i need to learn

i'd also like to learn more about japanese culture and life in tokyo

You've come to the right place.

To start learning Japanese, you need to first learn Hiragana and Katakana. They are the phonetic writing systems that are used in Japanese. Learning those two syllabaries only has to take about 2 weeks if you work hard enough. Once you're done with that, order yourself a good textbook and get started. That's how I did it. As for the "life" part, I suggest you take a look in the http://www.japanforum.com/forum/going-japan-forum/ part of JF.

at least now i have a starting point,

i'll take your advice and get to work on it after some well earned sleep, i've spend the last few hours trying to make sense of stuff and had no sucess, now thats cleared up, can start learning

By different types, I assume you mean different politeness levels. Start with PL3 verbs. Most language books start with this, so no worries. DO learn katakana as soon as possible!
