There's a whole variety of means & contexts to say it. "Aishiteru", is a popular way of putting it, and it's my favourite. ^^ I think "Daisuki" is somewhere around there, although the connotations are not as strong.

I'm still learning, so it'd be best to wait for an expert's clarification.

There's no such thing as happy endings, for when you find true love, happiness is everlasting.

I love you is aishiteru. You may want to check out the language section of your local book store. There are even books on Japanese in the manga section of some stores. I suggest you try something with a disk with it, if you are like me and have a hard time with pronouncations. I always find it easier if I can hear the words being said. If you can afford it The Rosetta Stone is awesome. My friend is using it right now and she says it makes it so easy. She's going to let me borrow it when she's through.

aishiteru 愛してる or aishite-iru 愛している (the second is the actual dictionary form, and the first is more colloquial) means "I love you", but one should keep in mind that it doesn't have as broad a spectrum of use as in English. When you say it in English, "I love you" can mean anywhere from boyfriend-girlfriend love to deep, deep love. Saying it in Japanese usually means only the latter. daisuki 大好き is probably more appropriate for anything less that you still consider love.
