The Kanji Kraze

Do you have a favorite kanji or kanji compound? Do you want to know any particular ones? Any comments or questions about kanji in general?

Please remember to enlarge the kanji so that the Japanese-learners here can see the strokes well, especially with complicated kanji.

Let me start.

日本

It's pronounced Nihon or Nippon (Nihon is more common), and it means 'Japan'. 日 means 'the sun' and 本 means 'origin'. The Land of the Rising Sun, as it's sometimes called in the West.

well to continue your trend of your own country, i shall do my country.

豪州
Australia

豪 - ごう - gou - overpowering, great, powerful, excelling, Australia
州 - しゅう - shuu - state, province

*Please note while many of the characters carry the same meaning in Chinese and Japanese this is not the case for this word. 豪 has no relation to Australia in Chinese

Yes, I know what you mean, anrakushi. I wonder who decided to write 'Australia' as 豪州, too. But it sure looks good!

I like 語 because it is very linear and looks organized and has a lot of strokes, but is easy to remember.

I've always liked this one, for "rose":

薔薇

Not sure why. It just looks neat, and I don't see it that much since most people usually just use バラ.

I like that one, too. You see it in fiction, but many people just use the katakana now, which is kinda sad.

I like these three, not particular reason, liked them since childhood

Nice choices! I like them all myself, especially . It has such an evanescent look to it. A love so one-sided, so innocent...
