grammar helpーたすけってください。

雨が降って人は南口に出たり入ったりしました。

I need this sentence to say:
It was raining and people were coming out and entering the southern exit by turns. (in polite Japanese)
I don't know how to manage it since I feel like the te-form of the first verb needs imashita (iru) at the end of the sentence, but I've been taught to combine tari-tari-forms with a final suru/shimasu/shimashita.

I would really appreciate some advice on how to handle this.
Thanks!

First of all, it's たすけて, not たすけって. The latter sounds more Italian than Japanese. lol

Second of all, you almost had that sentence! One thing I need to ask to make it better is whether the fact that it was raining had anything to do with the fact that people were using the South Exit out of all exit choices. That will determine the ending of the first part of the sentence.

Well, I'll play since no one else has yet.

1. Rain
2. Choice of exit

If number 2 has nothing to do with number 1:

雨が降っていて、人は南口から出入りしていました。

If number 2 occured as the result of number 1, then:

雨が降っていたので人は南口から出入りしました。

I changed the somewhat awkward 出たり入ったりする to the more refined 出入りする. But you will choose either.

Sorry to ask, but how do you read the 出入りする kanji and the 南口 kanji? Thanks.

出入りする = でいりする OR ではいりする I recommend that you use the former.

南口 = みなみぐち

Are you ok with the kana, chompalomp2?

chompalomp2 04-26-2008 12:26 AM

Yeah, thanks so much, I can read all the kana. Just kanji I'm bad at. I know most of the basic ones but still leaning combinations ans more advanced words. Thanks again.
