That sentence makes perfect sense.

That verb means both listen/hear and ask. Since either way I can't seem to give any sense to that phrase I suggest you listen to MMM who has more experience.
I mean, grammatically it makes sense with both of them...and it might be that I am missing the whole context, that's why I can't find a sense in the phrase.

You are right...and, oddly, it makes sense with either. Basically, because it's a homework tape, they cannot help is what it sounds like to me.

That's what it sounds like to me as well.

When it comes to listening to a recording or music, I see 聴く more often than 聞く.
