I've seen the letter 'w' a lot on youtube comments by Japanese and in anime.(btw, does anime have a plural form?) I'm guessing it means something like 'lol,' but where did it originate from?

I was told it's an expression similar to 'lol'... But I can't shed any info on it's origins.

Just to clarify, 笑い in romaji is "warai", so the first letter "w" is used as an abbreviation.
