A few translations

Hello guys :)

first post here and i have a special favor to ask of you.

Ive decided to have a tattoo and since im obviously posting here its gonna be in japanese.. but seeing as im incapable of speaking that i will need one or some of you to translate a few words for me. And i would really appreciate it..

so my tattoo is gonna be a circle of 5 japanese words: Love, Dreams, Disciplne, Faith and Trust.

Thanks for your time,

Will

P.S: Would be great if you used BIG font to make it easier to print/"read"
P.P.S: What i ment was the symbols.. rather than the long words themselves, like 1 symbol for each.. if it exists obviously

A guy who can't speak Japanese, getting a tattoo in Japanese.

What a tool :D

I wonder if my speal about permanently marking you body with characters you cannot read and trusting strangers on the Internet to give you honest and correct answers applies here.

I don't get it... is there something wrong with the ones he posted? What else are you looking for?

FYI, they're characters, not symbols.

Personally, I feel it's a bit silly as well.

Also a valid point, but anyone can verify the Kanji I posted (or even look up their own, shocking concept!) on Jisho in 5 minutes.

Many people do that and it also does look fascinating, so why not treat it like a picture / symbol.

I just find it rude that you come asking for our help, then saying it's not good enough.

The fact is, as a guy who can't speak Japanese and had to ask other people for the Kanji, those tattoos really don't represent you, do they?

MMM 12-20-2008 09:58 PM

You can plug the English words in a E-J dictionary and those characters will come up. What you haven't done is the other way around.

What happens when you go the other way around? You will find that these concepts are not 100% translatable into a single word, and these characters can mean more than what you are intending.

The character for "faith" also means "truth", "confidence" and "fidelity" among other things. The one for "trust" also means "request". etc.

I don't know how you are going to arrange them, but their proximity to each other can also change the meaning further. The first two are OK, but the last three are odd for tattoos, and a Japanese person looking at them would think you are strange. It might look like you lost your trust in someone and are trying to get it back.

There is nothing wrong with what Captain Thunder posted, but now you got my speal on permanently marking your body with writing you can't read.

Have I seen this thread somewhere before? Or maybe more than one? Is it maybe a fashion and I didn't know?
