I think it's a hell of a lot easier to learn Japanese if you're Chinese or Korean. But if you're American it's like the whole language systems gets flipped 180 upside down, inside and out. I can't even imagine how an American can process some of the Japanese thoughts and terms.

If you already know Chinese that'll make it easier.

But the fact that you're already doubting the effort, would make me advise you to simply not do it.

Agreed. It's harder than, say, Spanish or German. But it's still eminently doable for someone with a moderate amount of motivation.
