Schools in my area are K-6 Elementary, 7-8 Middle, 9-12 High. I didn't realize that it was so different other places either.

The only schools in my area when I was growing up was K-6 Elementary, 7-12 High School. Small town though.

Here in New Zealand, schools (by grade) are:

Primary: K-6
Intermediate: 7-8
College/high school: 9-13

Similar to US.
School is not compulsory until you turn 6, but most people start when they are 5. And it is also not compulsory for the last year of high school.
