Japanese コンポ is what I would call a shelf stereo / shelf system, or something like that. Component in English makes me think of actual parts or component cables.
But... I`ve been out of the US so very long that maybe they`re called them components now instead of stereos or shelf systems. :D

If the stereo system is just connected to a TV, computer or some other media device I'd probably call them just 'speakers' instead.

I wouldn't just refer to them as "components" in general. I'd need that word in the specific context of "the components to my set-up are X, Y, and Z." I would understand the meaning in other contexts, but there would be a fleeting thought of component cables.

Maybe it's an age thing. The receiver, tape deck, CD player, record player were all called "components" for a stereo system. I don't think a lot of people have these things as separate items anymore, if at all, so the term may be outdated.
