Kanji for Cherry Blossom

I'm curious as to when you write cherry blossom and mean JUST the blossoms, not the tree aswell, do you still write it as 桜? I'm asking because I've seen the character written without 木 infront of it and would like to know why.

That would usually be 桜.　You can also say 桜の花.

「桜」 can mean the tree, the blossoms and the combination of the two.

So, when I've seen it written the same but without 木infront of it what does that mean? Does it still mean the blossoms, tree, and what not or is it incorrect? Is it still read as 'sakura'? :S

How would I know what it means? You have the context and I don't.

It's still read さくら. Why use romaji when asking kanji questions?

I don't really have the context. It's just that single character on a picture of a cherry blossom tree. So I guess it just means the same???

And I meant to write it as さくら instead of in ramaji. Guess I just forgot to go back and turn hiragana. Opps. I didn't think it was that big of a deal. Soorry :S
