particle used with 如し
Hello, I am a newbie in this forum. よろしくお願いします。
I read two ことわざ and both happens to use the word ごとし 1.光陰は矢のごとし 2.過ぎたるはなお及ばざるがごとし I learned that the particles put before ごとし is の and が. I hope that anybody can explain the difference to me. Thanks a lot. :) |

Thanks a lot, Masaegu-san.
I have other questions. Is 如し also used in everyday conversation? I wonder if you can show me examples of other sentences using 如し. Also, what is the actual meaning of the second ことわざ ? 過ぎたるはなお及ばざるがごとし I read several sites explained different meanings of it. Thank you very much. :) |

When we actually use it as a word, it's usually in the form 如く. It's most often used in somewhat dramatic speech by adult speakersn and is seldom used by teenagers. e.g. あの時の高橋さんは聖母マリアのごとく見えた。 スミスさんは風のごとく走っていった。 君の瞳は星のごとく輝いている。 _________ The meaning of 「過ぎたるはなお及ばざるがごとし」 is "Doing something in excess is as ineffective as not doing enough of it." Ignore any sites that tell you otherwise. |
わかりました。
Masaegu-san, どうもありがとうございます。 :) |
