Siokan... I thank you so much for such sad but additional information on on the 26th Armored Division. Yes, many, many soldiers on both sides died in a heroic battle almost 70 years ago.

According to the webpage as well as American documents, yes, the Division was nearly wiped out. Also, although my father is an American citizen, his youngest brother (my uncle) Suetaro Kanemoto was a Corporal in the Japanese Army. He was killed by Allied Forces in Leyte Gulf so I am sure my grandparents who were living in Hiroshima also grieved as well.
