Calligraphy Help Needed -
06-30-2011, 03:06 PM
Hello. Could some kind soul with better eyes than mine please give me the Romaji for the attached calligraphy? It is a porcelain mark I am having difficulty identifying, and I hoped that if I had the Romaji I could narrow my search. Many thanks in advance.

Ah, now i know why it felt odd.
Anyways, I think the the top character starts off with 草冠, and the bottom part would sugest 荷. The two bottom characters - I am still not sure. Especially the left hand side of the bottom character is a mystery. I doubt this is 言. |

It does not work that way. The top character is read KA or NI, and if this is a name can also be HASU or RI. And we still have two characters undeciphered.
The reading depends on many things, such as context, type of the phrase, meaning (as kanji may have few of them; 荷 means "load", "baggage", "cargo", "freight", "goods", but also "burden", "responsibility", and if this is Chinese, it could be "lotus" or "Holland" read HE2, or "to carry on one's shoulder" HE4, etc. ). In short, it is impossible to read it (at this stage). I may take this picture with me and consult my caligrapy teacher, perhaps he will know. Finally, i could be wrong, and it this could be a cursive script of another character (such as 苟), which will change the reading. Cursive script is like a jungle, nearly anything goes. This is a signature, so it could be disfugured on purpose, too. |
