Japanese Characters on Flag -Need Help

Hello friends,


I know that the smaller letters are unreadable in this photo, but can you please tell me what the larger characters mean? Once I get the flag, I will post bigger pictures, but this is all I have for now.

Not much is readable.

4 kanji on far right:
武運長久 ＝ "May you always be victorious!"　

3 kanji on top:
同研會　＝　"Doukenkai". Name of an association.

3 kanji near the bottom of the first phrase:
佐藤博　＝　"Satou Hiroshi" A man's name.

The flag is a WWII Japanese military flag.

Do you think that Satou Hiroshi is the name of the soldier who was presented this flag?

Also what is Doukenkai?


I will post a lot more bigger photos when the flag arrives.

To tell who Satou is, I have to see the writings around the name. It could be the soldier who was going to the war and it could be one of the people who sent him off. My past experience with these flags tells me that the latter is the case but there could be exceptions.

Unfortunately, I have no idea what kind of association Doukenkai was. The name is in the form of an "acronym" so to speak, so it does not tell what it is.

What do you mean by "association". Do you mean a military unit or division?

No, I do not mean that. It is usually friends and family who create these flags, not the soldiers. I presume it was a group that these people including the guy being sent off belonged to. A larger and clearer pic will reveal the names of these people and possibly some other info.

Again, I have no idea what kind of a group it was. These flags are highly personal and outsiders like us will not always understand everything written on them. I know it was an "association" because there is the kanji for it, 會.
