Show us how YOU would say it first. You have stated many times on JF that you know some Japanese.

Well, "photo" is "shashin", "you" is "anata", "please" is "onegai shimasu", and I don't know what can I is so i'm going to go with "watashi wa", and I'm probanly wrong but I think take is kakarimasu. I would say it "Shashin anata onegai shimasu watashi wa kakarimasu?" Sounds right. How would you most of the time say it?

Japanese is more complex than that, you cannot take a literal translation of words and slap it together.

My limited japanese would suggest:

anata no shashin o totte mo iidesu ka

あなたの写真を撮ってもいいですか?

It is literally "Is it ok to take a picture of you?"

Though, more fluent members can probably correct me

1. You don't need あなたの. 写真を撮ってもいいですか。 Or how about 写真を撮らせていただけないでしょうか。 :)

2. I was just joking.

3. "Cayla" = "she" :)

What does that mean?

evanny 08-03-2011 07:25 AM

if it is "can i take a photo.." then how about 写真をとれるか? just seems like it since it is the form "i can".

Cayla 08-03-2011 10:06 AM

Here is something I found;

私はあなたの写真を撮ることができます

but this doesn't help me to say it :o

watashi wa anata no shashin wo toru kotogadekimasu

Though, the sentence doesn't sound right to me...

In the future, you can always use Romaji Translator at Romaji.org to help you with romaji pronounciation where you can just copy/paste japanese text in...

It is katakana English for "Is photo okayなの"

That is incorrect. とれる is about having the skills necessary to take a photo ("can"), not about permission ("may"). Modern English confuses "can" and "may" while Japanese does not. OP is really asking for "may," not "can."

(Not to mention that the form you chose (plainか) sounds way too gruff to say to a stranger whose picture you want to take!).

Your intuition is good: it is wrong. The end. Please see my immediately preceding post for an explanation.
