[Question Help] What is oval table? - 09-14-2011, 11:34 PM

Hello,
How can I say "What is oval table?" in Japanese?
Can I say?

takushi wa nan ranen desu ka.
たくしはなんらんえんですか。

Here is what I did...

I used the subject (table) at the beginning and then used "wa".
I then used "what" "nan".
I used the adjective "oval" "ranen" before the verb.

Is that right?

"What is oval table?" doesn't make too much sense in English. At least not to me.

EDIT: Do you mean "What is AN oval table?"

Yes, that's right.
What's "an" in Japanese?
Also is my grammar in japanese correct?
As I used the adjective before the verb "is" "desu".
So is that correct?

Hi. I'm not a native speaker, but I believe most people say テーブル, not
たくし. In fact, this is the first time I've heard the word たくし - Microsoft IME doesn't even generate the kanji for it (卓子) automatically. Anyway, searching on Google with quotes and using kanji, 卵円のテーブル (らんえんのテーブル) produces no results, 卵形のテーブル (らんけいのテーブル) produces 22,300 results, and 楕円形のテーブル (だえんけいのテーブル) produces 173,000 results. I'd go with だえんけい for oval.

Also, do you mean, "Is the table oval?" or "What is an oval table?"? What you wrote in Japanese is close to "Is the table oval?"

"What is an oval table?" would be "だえんけいのテーブルはなんですか?"

"Is the table oval?" would be "テーブルはだえんけいですか?"

Also, there is no word for "an" or "the" in Japanese. There are grammar constructions that serve similar functions, but, needless to say, they are used very differently.

So we should use the adjective of the noun at the beginning of the sentence?
So just: Adjective "Oval だえんけい" > のUsed after the Adjective> Noun "table テーブル"> "wa" after the Subject> What "なん"> Verb "です".
