Intermediate Quiz: Colloquial Contractions
Here is a list of colloquial contractions that we often use in informal speech. I am certain that you have heard or seen some of these in dramas, movies, anime , etc. Write the "dictionary" form for each. Feel free to answer as many as you want to.
This will be my last quiz if less than 10 people even care to participate (but still keep claiming to know Japanese in threads outside of the Language section). No demand, no supply. *Native speakers, please do not answer. Commenst are welcome, though. *Major Leaguers such as MMM and Nyororin, please wait at least until several people have participated. Alright, giving it my best shot without reference to dictionaries or any other sources.
つーか → というか つーの → というの つって → と言った/と言いました なんつって → 何と言ったか/何と言いましたか なんちゃって → ??? same as above? てか → っていうか/というか ったら → ??? (しっ)たら ? らんない → いらない/いりません っしょ → でしょう ったく → まったく ボクんち → 僕のうち 田中んち → 田中のうち やっぱ → やっぱり/やはり っとけ → ておけ っとこ → ておこう/ておきましょう もん → ものだ/ものです ちゃう → てしまう/てしまいます ちゃった → てしまった/てしまいました |
Many of these I think I've never actually used or heard, but I'm going to hazard a guess anyway. I'll mark the ones I actually use or have encountered before with a ＊
つーか ＞ と言うか＊ つーの ＞ と言うの つって ＞ と言って なんつって ＞ なんと言って なんちゃって ＞ ？？ てか ＞ ？？ ったら ＞ I don't know what this is a contraction for, but isn't it used after a name to express exasperation? らんない ＞ ららない？ っしょ ＞ と一緒 ったく ＞ 全く＊ I think this is said with frustration, too, but can't be sure..I'm imagining a girl mad at her boyfriend muttering ったく...今日あたしの誕生日わよ！ ボクんち ＞ 僕のうち＊ 田中んち ＞ 田中のうち＊ やっぱ ＞ やっぱり／やはり＊ っとけ ＞ っておけ（る）？ っとこ ＞ either something with 男 or ところ? もん ＞ もの＊ ちゃう ＞ てしまう＊＊＊＊ ちゃった ＞ てしまった＊＊＊＊ (I use these last two all the time. They're probably the only to in my active vocabulary.) Edit I just looked at Cola's answers. I think I'm going to have to agree that っしょ = でしょう. I'm guessing this based on っす being a contraction for です, which I used all the time in Japan. It became my Japanese equivalent of "like" in English. Way overused thanks to all the college kids I was around. |

I know so few, but I like to read these quizzes even though I don't usually answer so I will answer the few that I do know (or think I know rather =P)
らんない -> られない ボクんち -> ぼくのうち 田中んち -> 田中のうち やっぱ -> やっぱり？ もん -> もの？ I didn't look at any other posts yet, so these have probably been answered already but I will answer again anyways :) |
