About the reading; Is reading manga with furigana any good as a beginner? Or should I focus on (children's) stories/novels?
I won't understand much at all since I'll be starting from scratch.

That story is from the novel 像の消滅 (if I looked it up correctly). Any idea if the other stories are also readable for a beginner? I'm thinking about purchasing that novel.

Not sure, to be honest I steer clear off manga. It is a bit like eating junk food. Although, I bet you can get a decent one somewhere. The native speakers here will guide you, I am sure.

If you use it as your main learning source you'll be in trouble, but you have to admit that it is one of the best places to encounter *spoken* Japanese in text. The written Japanese encountered in novels is very far from the language that is spoken, both in vocabulary and grammatical patterns. For spoken Japanese, while there is some crap mixed in, manga can't be beat.

Anime, on the other hand, is a terrible thing for listening practice. Pretty much any other Japanese programming will give you better exposure.

I learn Chinese from it and it is freaking amazing.

I have the English version of the book, and it's in there.

Out of 17 short stories, there are only 4 shorter than 10 English pages. It depends on how patient you are. I only counsel you should read short stories (the shorter the better) because you'll burn out otherwise when you can't get the satisfaction of getting through a story in a day.
