Hello...

A friend's mom brought back a souvenir from a recent trip to Japan. It was a bag that she could put together herself. The only problem now is that she can't read the instructions. ^^;

I tried to translate it for her, but with my limited Japanese, I couldn't figure out some of it. I posted it on some web space I had, and I was hoping someone here could help me out.

I'm pretty new to this forum, so please let me know if my post is weird or offensive or annoying or... yeah.

I'm hoping someone can help me if I narrow down my questions a little.

Question 1:
In the document I was trying to translate (link in the original post), I saw the following:

ひも通し

Can someone let me know what this means? I think it means something like a "string through-hole", but I'm not sure.

Question 2:
In the following text, I can't tell what the word MACHI (マチ) means.

マチを作る。
[Make a "MACHI".]
縫目をひらき三角のマチを作る。
[Open/widen the seam/stitch and make a triangular "MACHI".]
マチを縫い裏返すと 6図 になる。
[Once you sew a "MACHI" and turn it inside out, it'll become figure 6.]

Does anyone know what it means?

Hi Arisa,

"Himo-tooshi" means the loop on the top part of the type of bag that you are making, through which you place the string for fastening. "Machi", in the world of bags, means the thickness of the bag (especially at its bottom). I hope this helps, but if it doesn't please let me know. Good luck!
