2 years is enough to learn the basic stuff. First thing you have to do is take lessons cause being taught over the Internet isn't as efficient.

Since you live in California, there are a number of universities there that offer Japanese classes. You don't have to be an enrolled student; you can probably just audit the classes. If you take two years of Japanese at a university before moving you'll be able to get a pretty decent start in Japan...
