The particle "Wa" -

So, what exactly does it mean? I have heard from some it is a subject marker, and from others that it means "As far as I know.."

It is a particle that comes after the subject of a sentence.

I think a direct translation of wa would be "is" or "am."

That's not exactly a direct translation, as "wa" isn't a verb and can't be conjugated. It falls in the place where "is" or "am" often fall, though.
