Well, I had a hard time learning the particles at first, but now it's more about finding a teacher to study more frequently. And about Chinese, I'll say that the two seems quite difficult at first, but I got Japanese faster. (I'm trying to learn Chinese as well and I have a hard time, really) I don't know for English natives, but for a French Native, both are different from the mother tongue...

For me, they were quit easy to learn. I would have to say that Kanji would be the most difficult by terms of the large number of them.

There is also stroke order, type, and count when you are writing in Japanese.
