New Dragonball Series!?!

A new series of Dragonball (named ドラゴンボール改 Dragonball KAI) is to start on FujiTV on the 4th of April!

Very little is know about it atm, its all a bit hush hush, but since the kanji 改 means "revision" it seems they may be doing a bit of a remake.

Heres the teaser trailer.

Comments?

Kanji_The_Wanderer 03-23-2009 10:31 PM

As much as I love DBZ and all, I don't understand the point of this? What kind of revision could the story have? Awhile ago they remastered every episode and released it on television, what else needs to be done?

I don't think it needs a remake, it's perfect just the way it was (is).

I just prefer it in English over it's Japanese dubbing, IMO they did a much better job.

I'll have to see what this "DB:Kai" is going to entail.

I'm a little curious, but not all that much.

SHAD0W 03-23-2009 10:38 PM

Interesting comment, Kanji.

Personally I think its to combat the american LA movie since they ruined DB. They wanted to give the fans something awesome to look forward to instead of something to be embarassed about taking their girlfriend to see.

Kanji_The_Wanderer 03-23-2009 10:42 PM

Yeah, I see your point there SHAD0W. I refuse to see that movie, looks like one of the biggest wastes of film and money I've seen in awhile.

Hopefully this "new" series that is going to be released will show people how the DB Universe is really supposed to be.

I'm sure you'll be keeping us posted.

SHAD0W 03-23-2009 10:56 PM

We can only hope they don't make a mess of it too. Like, too much of a good thing, ya know?

DBZ was great, GT killed it. DBK can only go one way or the other.

Personally though, i liked the japanese verison more before I started speaking the language - i think it has more depth and feeling to it?

plus overly enthusiastic american accents do my head in - no offence to my american friends.

Aniki 03-23-2009 11:27 PM

I never thought I'd see somebody who would be so excited over a remastered version of DBZ.

BakaCrisis 03-23-2009 11:32 PM

I've seen it remastered before, my friend has it downloaded...

Koir 03-23-2009 11:35 PM

I bet it's over 9000.

Hey, someone had to say it. :)

Hahahah good call.

Tangram 03-23-2009 11:59 PM

From what I've gathered, it started out as a plan to simply remaster it. Higher quality video and sound. Then, someone said, "Hey, let's fix some of the funky dialogue." Then, someone else said, "While we're at it, let's take out this episode." And then it ended up as a new series.

*hopes to god they remove the filler episodes like goku's many trips down snake way and the wait for the cell games to name but a few*

Koir 03-24-2009 12:04 AM

Eliminating the hours-long yells would speed things up too...

It also makes you sound constipated, or willingly giving yourself high blood pressure. But hey, who I am to judge...

...can I have your stereo?

If you don't mind wiping the copious amounts of dust off it then yeah :p

Seriosly though, the screams helped make DB what it is.

Koir 03-24-2009 12:36 AM

Guess so. Still, it was cheesy enough to make a lot of fondue.

SceptileMaster 03-24-2009 02:01 AM

I'm looking forwards to it, just to see what they do with it. I always like the manga as well though because it was quicker paced.

Anyway it can't be any worse than GT. I just pretend GT doesn't exist in the Dragonball timeline. Well I suppose it wasn't even written by Akira Toriyama, unless I'm mistaken... well hopefully not, so then it's not a true continuation. There is no super saiyajin 4 in my head (I can always wish).

Seconded for truth. The SSJ Oozaru form was an awesome idea though, if they'd of kept their tails it could have been possible. They should do an alternate storyline - if not an anime, then a game like shin budokai 2 only.. good?

Pexster 03-24-2009 02:18 PM

The new series all sounds good to me.

@SHADOW-i agree, with the screaming.

burkhartdesu 03-24-2009 03:20 PM

They should have ended Dragon Ball with Dragon Ball, in my opinion.

Dragon Ball Z is just as different from Dragon Ball as GT is from Z.

surprised to hear that:eek: The American version makes me sick, cant stand the voices or the music haha. DBZ is what got me into anime some 15 year ago, when i first saw it, it was a copied tape with no subtitles. But i was so amazed by the fighting and such i didn't need to know what people were saying, the voice actors had enough emotion to get the point across. The only series i prefer the english version is "Golden Boy" simply because he sound more dorky, yet the keep the emotion from the the Japanese version tact.

This seems kool. but i was hoping for some actual new DBZ episodes, they should bring back cell, like a grown up cell .jr:D

Cell was a bit sh!t imo..

Vegeta, Freiza and Kid Buu were the best :p

Yuna7780 03-24-2009 06:50 PM

Oh no... Not another.

But Z was still from the same manga series written by the same guy (akira toriyama). It may have been different from dragonball but was still very good imo.

SHAD0W 03-26-2009 01:14 PM

Z was still the best series though, Right?

Agreed. Though I can't wait to catch this new series. Fuji TV, right shadow?

I suck at listening/understanding native Japanese talk in their natural speed (which is probably what the entire show will be like), so hopefully I'll be able to understand the jist of it. D:

Might have to ask some questions here and there shadow, so HOLD MY HAND SOME MORE PLEHZ

XD

This version is going to be closer to the manga, meaning, no filler (or hardly any of it) and a faster pace. I for one really would like to see it. They're also probably doing this because this is DBZ's 20th anniversary. Its anime started in April of 1989.

The only thing I'm a bit iffy on, is the fact that they're not going to keep the original opening songs (Head Cha-La/We Gotta Power) and ending songs (Dete koi Tobikiri Zenkai Power/Bokutachi wa Tenshi Datta). I really liked those songs.

IMO, Dragon Ball was. It was more about "skill" as opposed to power. The other characters did more for it. It had a lot of comedy. Goku was just too adorable with his naive nature.

Hmm.. Maybe... DB seemed to have a lot of filler episodes that did my nut in.

Yes i know Z did too, but the whole SSJ thing, wow.

Z bugged me with the way its filler was done. They did the one thing that's always bugged me about any series...extended a canon arc in every way possible. They would either used extremely long speaking scenes or unnecessarily extend the fights or maybe extending a move out. I'd rather put up with an anime original filler arc as opposed putting up with a canon arc being overly extended. Seems that Dragon Ball just had added in original filler. One of my favorite group of eps for Dragon Ball, were the final ones of the Piccolo Jr. saga that dealt with just Goku and Chichi.

superheel 03-27-2009 12:54 AM

It'll be awesome if they will reboot the whole series. But I have a horrible feeling that this thing is another april fool's joke, like the Dragon Ball AF before.

No, because the information has been out too long, there's even a teaser out for it and the information is up on Toei's official site. That's way too much effort for a holiday that's not celebrated in Japan. Besides, they just came out with that DBZ special last November, which takes place 2 years after the Buu Saga and the timing of when DBZ starts up next month seems almost like an anniversary thing. DBZ started, in Japan, in April of 1989...here it is 2009, the series, in general, is still ultimately popular over there, and also the 20th year since it started.

nobora 03-27-2009 05:07 AM

^_^ YES! DBZ

Lol, that makes a lot of sense. I could see that happening.

I agree; I prefer the English dubbing over the Japanese voice-acting too. Though, looking a little deeper, I think it's somewhat of a matter of bias. If I were to grow up liking DBZ with the Japanese dubbing (which is unlikely ~ but hypothetically speaking...), I'd probably be saying the opposite.

As for the new movie...
Initially, I was very critical of it - and I still am - but I have to admit, it does look pretty cool (with the exception of Piccolo). I'd probably watch it... I just wouldn't look at it as a true DBZ movie.

About the filler episodes...
Am I the only one that really didn't care? Seriously, I enjoyed the show. I think people just complain a little too much.

In regards to which series is the best?...
I liked DB and DBZ. GT was a little "eh..." for me.

DB was a little more down-to-earth; a little more fun to watch. Like SSJup said, the storyline revolved around skill and adventure and less around power. Because of this, I feel the characters had more personality.

DBZ was more colorful than DB -- both literally and figuratively. It had intense action and good suspense. It was also longer, allowing for more variety, in terms of villains and events.

For me, as I mentioned, it was how the filler was done, not the fact that it had filler that was annoying. They extended stuff out way too much. They extended canon arcs out for far too long. The Freiza Saga is still a headache. Five minutes until Namek blows...20 eps later, they're still fighting!! Yes, I did exaggerate that, but that's w hat it felt like. :p

For me, it's definitely Dragon Ball. I like Z too. GT, I liked how it started, because it was very Dragon Ball-ish. An adventure to search for the Dragon Balls and meeting new people and beings while searching for it. It became too DBZish for my liking later on.

Yep yep. I prefer skill and adventure to power power power power, ki blast ki blast ki blast. I like DBZ, but that aspect started to bug me after a while, even though I did like the DBZ characters; ironically, I wasn't a big fan of most of the villains for DBZ. I preferred the DB villains. Seemed more "real" to me or something. One person actually told me that I probably liked DB more than DBZ is because I'm female. Like that has anything to do with it, probably. lol

Too long! >< It may have had variety, but it got annoying that these villains just wouldn't die or kept having other forms, even if the fight scenes were cool. I just wished it didn't take so long to get to the point where Z is concerned.

Main thing I did like for Z, regarding the Freiza saga, was how much hatred and dislike Vegeta had towards Freiza. Wish they could've kept in more background story to show what Vegeta went through as opposed to just a small glimpse. I think the Freiza Saga is when I really became a Vegeta fan.
