Which Japanese sport or athlete do you follow?

Like anywhere else, sports are huge in Japan. What Japanese sport or athletes do you follow?

skitty 04-19-2009 06:31 AM

IS cheerleaing a sport?(blonde moment)

StangGuy 04-19-2009 07:00 AM

I tend to pay attention to all sports, which means during international events I now pay attention to Japanese participants. During this past Olympics that meant I doubly paid attention to swimmer Saori Haruguchi because she is also a memeber of the Oregon State University swim team. Also, because I grew up in Oregon and now live just north of Seattle, I am a Mariners fan and also an Ichiro fan.

Troo 04-20-2009 10:40 AM

I'm a big Kotoōshū fan. He's looovely!

Ronin4hire 04-20-2009 01:39 PM

I used to like Genki Sudo.... the only reason I don't follow him anymore is cos he's retired.

I liked him for his humanist ideals more than his fighting ability. Don't get me wrong he's a good fighter but not the best.

l00pdel00p 06-15-2009 11:45 AM

I love watching Atsushi Watanabe 2x japanese superbike champion

toshi arai is pretty good to watch too!

Barone1551 06-15-2009 03:49 PM

Well I love baseball in the US so I guess it was a natural fit that I also loved baseball in Japan while I was there. The two players I liked to watch were Kanemoto, and Akahoshi. I am a Hanshin Tigers fan mostly. And there is no real reason besides the fact that that was the first game I went to there, and all my friends from Japan are Hanshin fans, with a few Carp fans sprinkled in.

mzamike 06-16-2009 07:55 PM

Keisuke Honda-hopefully he gets picked up by premier team, shinya aoki-badass MMA fighter.

TalnSG 06-16-2009 08:05 PM

Yuta Tabuse! The only Japanese NBA player so far.
Unfortunately he hasn't been active much lately - at least in the U.S.

But he was at the Mavericks mini-camp last week (I wish I had gotten to see that!), so maybe they will start talking. I would love to to see two of my favorite players on my home team - Dirk and Yuta.

peterv20 06-21-2009 06:26 PM

i do like ichiro suzuki of the seattle mariners.he looks like a samuri master when he holds his bat up before the pitch.he hits near .400 every year, and i mean every year!the world bantamweight champion(boxing)hozumi hasegawa is also pretty cool.

Sutiiven 06-21-2009 08:38 PM

Baseball all the way it is the main one i keep track on

nobora 07-24-2009 04:39 AM

There's this trampolinist but hes not so out there. I found him in Sasuke(Ninja Warrior) his name is Nagasaki Shunsuke. He would have gone on to the Beijing Olympics but he came in third place of the top 3 men that would compete for japan. And because of this he wasnt in it instead the top 2 were picked.

maxham 07-25-2009 05:37 PM

I love martial arts! I'm practising Aikido. And, Jujitsu could be also interesting, as wel as judo.

Kai13 08-31-2009 03:15 PM

Takahito Soma. (FCMarítimo)
Shunsuke Nakamura. (Espanyol)

And the JLeague in general.

tksensei 08-31-2009 03:20 PM

ozkai 09-10-2009 10:52 PM

I used to follow Sumo when I lived in Japan.

I was also bombarded with nightly TV stories in regrds to a Mr. Suzuki Ichiro who was a Japanese Baseball player that accepted a contract to play in the US for an American team.

He was the talk of the town at that time (not sure now). I even ended up purchasing a pair of Ichiro Juliet Oakley sunglasses:cool:

Ichiro just passed the 2000 hit mark with the Seattle Mariners and is an absolute lock for the MLB Hall of Fame. One of the best players of all time.

Football is my thing, and having lived in Shimizu I'm a big fan of Shimizu S-Pulse. Star man for them these days is Shinji Narazaki. He's also been a regular for the Japan national team recently scoring a whopping 15 international goals in 2009.

Any other Japan football/soccer fans take a look at this link Japan World Cup Team Blog for a Japan world cup blog, about all matters national team related.

JamboP26 01-20-2010 08:53 AM

fatalbert130 01-24-2010 01:25 AM

For me of the motorcycle rider, I respect Yoshimasa Sugawara.

He runs Japanese off-road motorcycle race and HINO even at the present when nearly 70 years old were and participates in a Dakar race.

But he is a professional driver, but it is not professional rider.

JamboP26 01-24-2010 05:32 PM

Just remembered my fav motorcycle rider. Superbike rider Ryouchi Kiyonari

FC Marítimo ain't really the greatest club of the Portuguese league, but he's a really nice player. Could be at a better one.

JamboP26 01-27-2010 08:59 AM

Just found out that Grenoble, in the French Ligue 1, have 2 Japanese players. Daisuke Matsui & Sho Ito. I also like Takayuki Morimoto in Serie A

termogard 01-28-2010 11:04 AM

I try to follow Yuta Tabuse, but its not very easy with him not playing in the NBA. I had hoped after the summer camp the Mavericks might hire him. Oh, well.

I would like to follow sumo, but with only local broadcast TV there is not much of it to watch in Texas. (any?)

And I have a friend who keeps tempting me towards Aikido.... but not very successfully.

SweetTooth 02-07-2011 06:05 PM
