Yes, many Japanese do. Fitness has long been a main concern among Japanese over the last two decades or so because our eating habits have become very much 'Westernized' and many of us weigh well over what we would like to.
There are all kinds of fitness gyms here where we can become individual members, and also companies become corporate members and let their employees use the gym. In addition to gyms, a lot of women (and some men as well) regularly go to aesthetic salons for face and/or body treatments.
I must mention that Yoga is very popular now especially among women in their 20-30's. Those people have probably gotten tired of doing aerobics or jazzercize. lol Not too many Japanese seem interested in building big muscles, though. They basically seem to want only to stay fit. I sometimes go to a swimming pool and I always see lots of middle-aged and older women walking in the pool endlesly. Yes, fitness seems to have become something of a national passtime in today's Japan.
