It's kinda because most people in America don't really talk proper like that, but it's your choice if you say it like that. :D

Yes, it was really really hard!

I ll tell you the story!

I went to an island called Niijima for holidays with my friend when
I was 17.

We were waiting for a bus to the beach.

A "foreing" couple (in their 50s) were there too.

They asked us something.
I didn't know exactlly what they said, but
I knew that they were going to leave the island
to take a ferry, they had a big suitcases and all that
and there are only 2 buses services in the island
to the beach or to the port.

We were at a bus stop in between the beach and the port.


I wanted to tell them
"If you are going to take a ferry to go back to Tokyo,
wait for the bus over there, it will take you to the port."
or something like that...

but I was like....

just pointing at the bus stop and said

"ship..."

and guess what?

They said,

OK Thank you !


Yes, we understood each other...

I made up my mind to study English hard! in case
of anyone asks me a question in English!
I wanted to be helpful!


so ship.... was kind of my first "spoken" English word.

I said and read aloud in English before, but
it wasn't real, just a fake, like classroom things.

I hope the couple enjoyed staying in Japan,
and cought the right bus!

yeah it's kinda confusing if you came from place that says "to ma to" then the other say "to may toe" which one would you use :confused:

anyways conversation is the best way to sharpen your english skills

I wouldn't really say its that Americans don't speak "properly", like you said, but just that there are so many variations of English out there.
British-English
Scottish-English
Irish-English
American-English
Canadian-English (Yes, it is slightly different to American in some aspects)
Austrlian-English
New Zealand-English (Again, slightly different from Australian)
Singapore-English

Each of these groups thinks they are correct. And each of these groups have subgroups. IE Canada has Newfoundland English, and each province/territory has its own small variations. Being from Saskatchewan myself, what the rest of the world calls a "hoody", I call a "bunnyhug".

There is no "proper" English anymore. There are varying levels of politeness, spelling and grammar accuracy, yes, but nothing "proper".

hahaha I just remembered a British Friend of mine who worked here in China for so many years & when he went back home to Britain for vacation his mother was asking him "Why are you talking so slow" :D

I think he got used to that way here in China coz if you talked realy fast & straight here they wouldn't get it right away. like "where will you be having dinner tonight' would be " where you eat night time" :p

haha, thats cool...wish there were things that had cool names like that down here.

I am not sure if I am "nice" (I want to believe I am not a bad person though;) )
but you would also feel the same if you meet Japanese tourists in trouble I guess?

and what made me really wanted to improve my English skills were

1) Very very nice and friendly Aussies who took care of me when I went to Australaia for the very first time.

I really wanted to talk with them properly.

2) Very very greedy Australian old lady who were trying to cheat me on many things.

I really wanted to tell her how wrong she was.


The Lady 2) was very "famous" for her cheatig things among Japanese students, because she was the one offered one of her rooms as a "homestay" to Japanese students of English for a long time and had a lot of troubles.

She only accept Japanese, cos she thought all the Japanese were rich and stupid.

but not me!

There actually are quite a few Japanese spoilt kids go to Australia to study English.Many of them live in a very nice house in a rich area and spend over $500 for international phone calls and all.

so she wanted one of those kids who just believes whatever told.

Bananas are very very expensive, so don't eat it too many...just one in a week.
Gas and electricity are very expencive, much more than the costs in Japan,so don't study at night...

and so on...


I knew the prices of the bananas and I asked my aussie friends about the gas and electricity bills, and they were much cheaper than Japna and all...

and I paid the lady about 100000yen(AUS$700at that time) per month for a room including breackfasts and dinners (called homestay style).so I knew the money was enought for me to use the light to study at night for an hour or two!

and one day I found out most of her foods she buys are "expired" ones from some special discount stores!!!

she kept doing not nice things to me for a few weeks and I got sick of it.

One day I told her that I was leaving, and she got furious, cos she knew that no many people wanted to stay at her place if I leave she wouldn't be able to get money from anywhere so she was trying very hard making me stay, but it was too late.


so there were good things and bad things

made me really want to improve my English.
